SUMMARY:Cobalt Blue for Flute/Piccolo performed at Coastal Carolina College
DESCRIPTION:Cobalt Blue for Flute (with Piccolo) and piano is performed by Olivia Odhiambo\, a flute student at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. Olivia is one of the consortium members that helped support the creation of Cobalt Blue. She is joined by Muriel Balzer on piano. \nCobalt Blue for Flute (with Piccolo) and Piano (version also available with Wind Symphony) is inspired by the beauty and unique landscape of Long Beach\, California\, with the solo flute (with piccolo) as our guide through its sights and sounds. The journey begins at the striking Walter Pyramid (I. The Great Pyramid)\, a cobalt-blue landmark rising 18 stories above the city on the campus of California State University\, Long Beach. As the flute soars above\, the Cobalt Blue theme emerges\, weaving throughout the piece. \n  \nMoving through the city’s roads and highways\, we arrive at the Grand Prix of Long Beach (II. The Grand Prix)\, where a rhythmic groove captures the speed and excitement of the race. As cars zip by\, the Cobalt Blue theme returns in a dreamlike\, slow-motion moment before accelerating toward the finish line. \nLeaving the race behind\, we head to the beach\, where the sound of the wind evokes the ocean breeze (III. Western Sandpipers at the water’s edge). The piccolo sings the calls of Western Sandpipers in a solo cadenza using several transcribed Western Sandpiper songs and playing in the surf – running\, darting\, and soaring into the sky. Sunlight sparkles on the water as the solo piccolo gives us a bird’s-eye view of the water and sand below. \nIn majestic flight\, we fly over the Long Beach harbor\, glimpsing the Queen Mary with her iconic red and black stacks (IV. Majestic flight over the Queen Mary). \n \nAs birds dive and glide above\, we await the deep\, resounding blast of her 55Hz typhoon whistle. The journey concludes back at the Great Pyramid\, bringing our musical exploration full circle. \nCommissioned by flutist Dr. Jenni Olson and a consortium of ensembles and individuals\, the world premiere of the Wind Symphony version was performed by Dr. Olson as soloist and the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Jermie Arnold on March 8\, 2025 at the Carpenter Center in Long Beach\, California. She premiered the piano version at CSULB on September 7\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Coastal Carolina University Composer Residency February 11-13\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Jenni is thrilled to be the 2026 Composer of the year for the REP Project at Coastal Carolina University. She will present workshops and events throughout her residency\, including masterclasses on composition\, accessible yoga for everyone\, and developing collaborative projects. She’ll also work with performers as the residency culminates in a recital of her music\, and Jenni will conduct the clarinet choir on her work Gather at the Rock.   \nThe REP Project is a collaborative initiative led by Dr. Eric Schultz and CCU students that focuses on diversifying music by working directly with a living American composer each year. Through residencies\, students engage with the composer in rehearsals\, masterclasses\, interviews\, and performances\, while also discussing the importance of representation in the concert hall. Building on experiences such as iconic composer Valerie Coleman’s impactful residency\, the project challenges traditional repertoire lists that have historically excluded many voices\, treating new music with the same depth and respect given to composers like Mozart and Brahms. By doing so\, The REP Project fosters a more inclusive and relevant approach to musicmaking\, while giving students a personalized and inspiring opportunity to shape the future of musical repertoire. \nFind tickets HERE for the Friday\, February 13 recital\n \nLearn more about the repertoire being performed HERE \n

SUMMARY:"The Blessing Trees" performed at St. Olaf College in Minnesota
DESCRIPTION:November 16\, 2025\n2pm Central\nAileen Razey\, clarinet and Kathryn Ananda Owens\, piano \nSt. Olaf College\, Urness Recital Hall \nA faculty recital that will address Climate Change and Climate Worries will include music\, poetry reading and meditation. Faculty members include Assistant Professor of Music Aileen Razey\, clarinet; Professor of Music Kathryn Ananda-Owens\, piano\, Assistant Professor of Music Wesley Dunnagan\, voice; and Associate Professor of Practice in English and Director of Environmental Conversation Juliet Patterson\, creative writing and poetry reading. This event is free and open to the public \nThe Blessing Trees explores the emotional landscape of our connection to nature. Inspired by Wendell Berry’s poem “Woods\,” the work reflects on the quiet reverence found in the forest\, where stillness is filled with the subtle music of the natural world. The clarinet and piano interweave timbral colors and lyrical lines\, echoing the imagery of a silent wood alive with sound. \nAs the piece unfolds\, the music grows in energy\, moving from shadow into light—a reflection on beauty\, responsibility\, and our role in preserving the fragile ecosystems that surround us. The final moments drift into silence\, like wind moving through the trees\, leaving space for reflection.

SUMMARY:The Sky Between Us performance at Duke University
DESCRIPTION:The Sky Between Us for Soprano Saxophone\, Alto Saxophone\, and Piano is performed by Susan Fancher and Heidi Radtke\, saxophones and Inara Zandmane\, piano. \nNelson Music Room\, Duke University\, East Campus\, Durham\, NC \nProgram Note\nThe inspiration for The Sky Between Us for Soprano Saxophone\, Alto Saxophone\, and Piano by comes from a poem titled “Under This Sky” by Zia Hyder\, translated by Bhabani Sengupta with Naomi Shihab Nye. The poem begins with the line: \nThere’s an enormous comfort knowing\nwe all live under this same sky. \nThe spirit of this poem speaks to the connections that link us together\, from sharing the same sun and moon to embracing the idea of collaboration and togetherness\, no matter where we live in the world or what we do. \nThis work explores what it means to be under the same sky and connect in new ways.  Using the colors of the saxophones and the piano\, I wanted to create a soundscape that interweaves the ideas of togetherness through beautiful melodic lines\, rhythmic gestures\, and fluid motion.  A journey of movement and hope\, this work celebrates the collaboration between the three voices as equal partners in creating a wide-open space of possibility. \nThe work is in one movement with three distinct sections inspired by the story in the poem: \nSun and Moon\nSweets and Snow\nLife and Love \nThe piece begins and ends with the Saxophones echoing back and forth to each other\, using the technique of playing into the open strings of the piano. I wanted to create this sense of openness\, of vastness and distance that eventually grows closer together\, symbolizing that although there is sky between us\, we are still connected. \nThis work was commissioned by the Covert Ensemble (Dave Camwell and Kateřina Pavlíková – www.covertensemble.com) and it was their vision and enthusiasm that brought us all together under the same sky to collaborate on this work. I want to thank them as well as the additional Consortium Members from around the world who are a part of the creation of this work. \nWe truly are living under the same sky\, and there’s a joy in knowing we can come together through music.
