SUMMARY:Orion Concerto performance at Troy University\, Alabama
DESCRIPTION:The Orion Concerto for Oboe and Bassoon with Wind Symphony is performed by the Troy University Symphony Band with soloists Jillian Camwell\, oboe and Kristina Nelson\, Bassoon.  This work is part of   the Southeastern United States Honor Bands & Clinics weekend at Troy University in Alabama. \nWhen: Friday\, February 6\, 2026\nWhere: Crosby Theatre\, Troy University\, Alabama\nTime: 7pm CST \nMore about The Orion Concerto \nThis piece tells the story of our Galaxy\, of the great unknown and what lies beyond\, and where we belong within this vastness of space.  The soloists and the ensemble paint a picture of this great mystery of the universe\, taking us on a journey through the Spiral Galaxy and the Milky Way.  Being pulled toward the Supermassive Black hole\, the djembe lends a rhythmic background of mystery to this journey.  We then travel to the place where stars are born in “The Orion Nebula\,” quoting Carl Sagen from his book Cosmos that\, “we are made of star-stuff.”  Finally\, we begin to leave the orion nebula to continue our journey again through the spiral galaxy\, exploring the vastness of space as thematic material returns to carry us on this ever-continuing journey of exploration. \nOriginally premiered as Double Concerto for Oboe and Bassoon with Wind Symphony\, the Orion Concerto is a shortened version of this work.  It was arranged at the request of Jonathan Hinkle\, Director of Bands at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction\, Colorado for performance during the Colorado Music Educators Association conference in January 2023. The original version Double Concerto was written for Scott Pool – bassoon\, and it was an honor to have him and Rogene Russell on oboe premiere it at the University of Texas at Arlington Wind Symphony under the direction of Doug Stotter in February 2013.  The European premiere of this work was given by the Banda Simfònica Municipal de Madrid under the direction of Rafael Sanz–Espert with Víctor M. SUMMARY:Coastal Carolina University Composer Residency February 11-13\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Jenni is thrilled to be the 2026 Composer of the year for the REP Project at Coastal Carolina University. She will present workshops and events throughout her residency\, including masterclasses on composition\, accessible yoga for everyone\, and developing collaborative projects. She’ll also work with performers as the residency culminates in a recital of her music\, and Jenni will conduct the clarinet choir on her work Gather at the Rock.   \nThe REP Project is a collaborative initiative led by Dr. Eric Schultz and CCU students that focuses on diversifying music by working directly with a living American composer each year. Through residencies\, students engage with the composer in rehearsals\, masterclasses\, interviews\, and performances\, while also discussing the importance of representation in the concert hall. Building on experiences such as iconic composer Valerie Coleman’s impactful residency\, the project challenges traditional repertoire lists that have historically excluded many voices\, treating new music with the same depth and respect given to composers like Mozart and Brahms. DESCRIPTION:Cobalt Blue for Flute (with Piccolo) and piano is performed by Olivia Odhiambo\, a flute student at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. Olivia is one of the consortium members that helped support the creation of Cobalt Blue. She is joined by Muriel Balzer on piano. \nCobalt Blue for Flute (with Piccolo) and Piano (version also available with Wind Symphony) is inspired by the beauty and unique landscape of Long Beach\, California\, with the solo flute (with piccolo) as our guide through its sights and sounds. The journey begins at the striking Walter Pyramid (I. The Great Pyramid)\, a cobalt-blue landmark rising 18 stories above the city on the campus of California State University\, Long Beach. As the flute soars above\, the Cobalt Blue theme emerges\, weaving throughout the piece. \n  \nMoving through the city’s roads and highways\, we arrive at the Grand Prix of Long Beach (II. The Grand Prix)\, where a rhythmic groove captures the speed and excitement of the race. As cars zip by\, the Cobalt Blue theme returns in a dreamlike\, slow-motion moment before accelerating toward the finish line. \nLeaving the race behind\, we head to the beach\, where the sound of the wind evokes the ocean breeze (III. Western Sandpipers at the water’s edge). The piccolo sings the calls of Western Sandpipers in a solo cadenza using several transcribed Western Sandpiper songs and playing in the surf – running\, darting\, and soaring into the sky. Sunlight sparkles on the water as the solo piccolo gives us a bird’s-eye view of the water and sand below. \nIn majestic flight\, we fly over the Long Beach harbor\, glimpsing the Queen Mary with her iconic red and black stacks (IV. Majestic flight over the Queen Mary). \n \nAs birds dive and glide above\, we await the deep\, resounding blast of her 55Hz typhoon whistle. The journey concludes back at the Great Pyramid\, bringing our musical exploration full circle. \nCommissioned by flutist Dr. Jenni Olson and a consortium of ensembles and individuals\, the world premiere of the Wind Symphony version was performed by Dr. Olson as soloist and the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Jermie Arnold on March 8\, 2025 at the Carpenter Center in Long Beach\, California. She premiered the piano version at CSULB on September 7\, 2025.
