We begin with a lullaby (partially borrowed from a Chippewa lullaby) sung gently to a child\, and then she begins to tell the story of herself.  In “Song of Basket-Weaving” she asks the Cedar tree (mother) to prepare her for love\, for bearing children\, and for becoming a woman.  In “Song of the Blue-Corn Dance she works with other women to harvest the corn.  Falling in love\, she sings a slightly giddy song “Oh I Am Thinking” which evolves into a strong and steadfast song in “Love Song from the Andes.”  Then her lover comes to her in “Love Song\,” but it is not too long after that he leaves her for Sault St. Marie in Michigan\, never to return again (I interpret this as death – he’s gone away\, maybe to fight\, or to hunt\, but he will never return to his lover).  We assume at this point in the story that the child she sings to is their child\, and she is telling the story of their love.  The story ends how it begins\, with the woman back in the present\, continuing to sing a lullaby to her child as life goes on\, without her love by her side. \nIt is a story that I feel can be universally understood\, but points to the strength of not only the Native American woman\, but to the strength of all women to persevere\, to raise children and to keep community strong against all odds.  It is a “love song” in that it goes beyond just romantic love but tells of love for a child and love of the land.   The work may be performed as a whole\, or individual movements may be chosen for a shorter performance. \nThis work was commissioned and premiered by Aryn Day Sweeney\, oboist and Assistant Professor of Music Performance at Ball State University with funding provided by the Indiana Arts Commission in 2014. It was premiered at Ball State University by Aryn Day Sweeney-oboe and Yoko Shimazaki-Kilburn-soprano in March 2014. \n“Love Songs for Soprano and Oboe” is available for purchase on Jenni’s website at Love Songs -soprano and oboe sheet music (jennibrandon.com)

SUMMARY:Christopher Mothersole Performs Jenni Brandon’s Chansons de la Nature and Cacophony\, for Clarinet & Delay Pedal
DESCRIPTION:Christopher Mothersole performs Jenni Brandon’s  Chansons de la Nature and Cacophony\, for clarinet & delay pedal on August 4\, 2022\, at 5:06 PM at the Studio Theater\, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts\, 900 Broadway\, Columbus\, Georgia 31901. This performance is free and open to the public. For those outside the Columbus area\, this concert will be live streamed via the Columbus State University\, Schwob School of Music Livestream available at the Schwob School of Music at YouTube channel: 8-26-22 Christopher Mothersole Guest Artist – YouTube. \nThe program is: \n\nCloudburst\, for Clarinet & Distortion (C. Mothersole)\nCircleplay II\, for Clarinet & Delay (S. Okpebholo)\nChansons de la Nature\, for Clarinet & Delay (J. Brandon)\nDEMO\, for EFX Clarinet (C. Mothersole) *Premiere*\nLa Noche Oscura\, for Clarinet & Delay (T. Broström)\nCacophony\, for Clarinet & Delay (J. Brandon)\nToccata & Fugue in D minor\, for EFX Clarinet (J.S. Bach/C. Mothersole)\n\nA native of Austin\, Texas\, Christopher Mothersole is Instructor of Clarinet & Chamber Music at the University of West Georgia. Christopher’s most recent work places him at the forefront of clarinet performance with guitar effect pedals. He has presented on this topic for the International Clarinet Association on multiple occasions\, demonstrating the enhanced sound capabilities of using live effects and working together with composers to create new music for what has been nicknamed “EFX Clarinet”. His duo CLX\, together with Timothy Fitzgerald (Professor of Clarinet\, University of North Georgia)\, presented & performed at ClarinetFest 2021. \nChansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette (version for solo B-Flat Clarinet and Delay) takes Jenni’s original work for Solo B-Flat clarinet and adds digital delay to the movements to create a unique and colorful version of this work. \nPerformance note \nPerformer should use an active PA speaker and a digital delay effects pedal capable of a .55-second delay. The performer may also use a similar digital/analog delay pedal or live audio processing software (ex. Ableton Live) to achieve this effect. \nAs an input device\, a piezoelectric pickup or an external microphone may be used to capture the clarinet’s sound for use of the effect. \nChansons tells a story about nature as told by the clarinet’s agile voice. The French titles and basis of the pieces were inspired by the lyrical and pastoral quality of the French language and the images it invokes.  The piece is also inspired by the images presented in Aesop’s fables (and Jean de la Fontain’s retelling of them); in particular\, the movement “Le Lièvre et la Tortue” tells of the slow tortoise beating the fast hare with his patience and determination.  Both creatures are represented in this movement\, from the plodding of the tortoise to the quick movements of the hare. \nThe other movements also represent a variety of characters and situations from these famous fables.  “Le Poisson” darts\, “Le Papillon” flutters and floats\, “L’étoile” shimmers in the night sky\, nature ‘dances’\, and “Le Serpent” is slippery and quick.    Each movement is short\, but just long enough to evoke a story and create a ‘song of nature’ for the clarinet. \nCacophony for B-flat Clarinet and Delay pedal \nThe inspiration for Cacophony comes from a large\, canopied tree on my street. At dawn and dusk\, the birds gather here and create an amazing cacophony of birdsong. In this work I wanted to recreate the sounds and textures of this effect by using both the lyrical and rhythmic abilities of the clarinet\, but also the color opportunities that the delay pedal offers. You will hear a variety of birdsong\, from a single bird singing just before dawn\, to the back-and-forth calls of birds using the reverse delay. The digital delay creates a sense of duet and birds trying to out-sing each other.  Eventually all the birds arrive in the tree to sing\, using the digital delay to create a hazy wall of sound as timbral trills break through the cacophony as individual songs of birds. \nI am very grateful to Chris for introducing me to the wonders of the delay pedal\, and for commissioning and premiering Cacophony. \nIn one movement with sections\, including the type of delay (reverb remains on throughout the piece): \nA single bird singing just before dawn (no delay) \nSparse\, open; like two birds calling to each other across a distance (Reverse Delay) \nBird Duet: Competitive birds singing before dawn; like birds flying off in opposite directions\, single bird sings again (Digital Delay) \nHazy\, like morning mist\, a brightening in the sky (Digital Delay) \nDawn arrives with a cacophony of song (Digital Delay) \nContemplative (Reverse Delay\, Digital Delay) \nAll of Jenni’s compositions are available for purchase on her website Home – Jenni Brandon https://www.jennibrandon.com

The inspiration for the piece came from a poetry book written by one of Mrs. Johnson’s friends\, Bette Woolsey Castro. Her book\, The Wildflower\, was inspired by the opening of Lady Bird’s Wildflower Research Center in Austin\, Texas\, and contains a collection of poems about wildflowers and nature. \nThe five movements of The Wildflower Trio for oboe\, bassoon\, and piano (oboe\, bassoon\, piano sheet music) are based on the imagery from several of these poems. The beautiful combination of the oboe\, bassoon\, and piano lend themselves to creating distinct colors and sounds that represent the wildflowers\, hummingbirds\, and summer afternoons in quiet gardens. \nI had the honor and privilege of composing this piece for two fine musicians to premiere. Rebecca Henderson-oboe\, and Kristin Wolfe Jensen-bassoon\, have performed this piece around the world with a variety of pianists\, including at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Melbourne\, Australia in June 2004 as well as for Mrs. Johnson at her Wildflower Center in Austin\, Texas. \nWildflower Trio\, by Jenni Brandon is available on Jenni’s website at The Wildflower Trio – oboe\, bassoon\, piano sheet music (jennibrandon.com)

This work is inspired by the sculpture of the same name by Long Beach\, California sculptor Susan Hawkins. This sculpture (pictured on the cover of this score) depicts two separate figures dancing around each other\, weaving their stories together\, but never touching. I loved the idea of using terms that are frequently used to describe dance and began to see the curves and lines and unique topography of these sculptures as fluid and moving. The bassoon and the piano become these two dancers\, gracefully moving across a stage to tell the story of this beautiful sculpture. \nIn “Prelude: Intertwine” the figures dance around each other\, one at first (the piano)\, and then the bassoon joining in\, flowing\, and weaving in and out of each other. As they move into the “Entrechat” you can hear the fast movement of the feet as the dancer leaps from the floor\, crossing and uncrossing the feet in mid-air as represented by the repeated staccato notes throughout this section. After much joyful leaping\, the bassoon and piano take turns with solos in “Divertissement: Gentle Beauty.” Leading into the section “Soar” which begins innocuously enough\, the dancers slowly begin to climb higher and higher\, reaching a climax in this section as the bassoon dazzles with its range and the piano moves deftly from one end of the keyboard to the other. Finally\, in “Postlude (Epilogue)” the original intertwine theme returns\, allowing the dancers to shift and flow gently around each other\, gently shifting back into the still image of the sculpture as the sound fades away. \nIt was a joy to write this work for these talented musicians\, who premiered the work at the Ostin Rehearsal Room on the campus of UCLA on September 21st\, 2015. \n  \nDouble Helix is available for purchase on Jenni’s website at Double Helix – Bassoon and piano sheet music (jennibrandon.com)

SUMMARY:“Chansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette”\, by Jenni Brandon\, Performed at ClarinetFest 2022 by Hilary Lowery
DESCRIPTION:“Chansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette”\, by Jenni Brandon\, was performed at ClarinetFest 2022 on Sunday\, July 3\, 2022 by Hilary Lowery\, clarinet. The concert was titled Silent Voices Project. \nClarinetFest® 2022 took place in Reno/Lake Tahoe\, Nevada\, USA\, June 29-July 3\, 2022. The ClarinetFest® 2022 program centered around the theme of Connecting People\, Ideas and Cultures. The conference also featured performances by the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra as well as emerging and established artists in solo and ensemble settings. \n“Chansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette” tells a story about nature as told by the clarinet’s agile voice. \nI. SUMMARY:The Mountain\, by Jenni Brandon\, Premiered at ClarinetFest 2022 by Carrie RavenStem and Adria Sutherland
DESCRIPTION:“The Mountain”\, by Jenni Brandon\, premiered at ClarinetFest 2022 on Tuesday\, June 30\, 2022\, by Carrie RavenStem and Adria Sutherland. The concert was titled Connecting With Composers: Commissions & Premieres Potpourri I. \nThe Mountain for two clarinets in B-flat is inspired by the poem “My Help is in the Mountain” by Nancy Wood (1936-2013). This work describes going to the mountain to find healing\, to draw inspiration from the rocks and streams\, and to become one with all of the land\, finding strength from nature and from within. Throughout this piece for two clarinets there is a sense of beauty and awe of the power of nature – from the joy of finding oneself in nature\, to the flowing waters passing by the trees. The work creates a sense of the majesty of a mountain and forest\, but also how nature can heal the soul. There are moments of joy and hope\, moments of reflection\, playfulness\, and solitude. \nThis work was commissioned by the La HERmandad Duo – Carrie RavenStem and Adria Sutherland and premiered during Clarinetfest© 2022 in Reno\, Nevada. \nMy Help is in the Mountain\nPoem by Nancy C. Wood \nMy help is in the mountain\nWhere I take myself to heal\nThe earthly wounds\nThat people give to me.\nI find a rock with sun on it\nAnd a stream where the water runs gentle\nAnd the trees which one by one\ngive me company.\nSo must I stay for a long time\nUntil I have grown from the rock\nAnd the stream is running through me\nAnd I cannot tell myself from one tall tree.\nThen I know that nothing touches me\nNor makes me run away.\nMy help is in the mountain\nThat I take away with me. \nOriginal poem © 1972 Nancy C. It seemed like an appropriate place to start telling of the fascinating topography and history of this area as Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet (86 meters) below sea level. This wide expanse of salt flats covers almost 200 square miles and contains white sea of mostly sodium chloride\, or table salt. Once an ancient inland lake\, because the water had nowhere to go\, sediment and salt accumulated over time\, leaving behind the miles of an otherworldly landscape in the middle of the desert. \nIn telling the story of this location\, I wanted the performers and audience to experience what it might be like to walk out across those salt flats.  The work begins with the performers playing with mallets wrapped in cellophane to create a crunchy sound much like walking out onto the salt basin. I also wanted to mix some other musical colors in here of the pristine white of the salt basin\, as well as the sound of the salt crystals expanding and popping in the desert heat by using the slap mallets. At times the performers use the shafts of their mallets to play\, and this represents the delicate formations of these salt structures\, as if you are crouching down to get a closer look. There is also a rhythmic motion in this piece that represents the waves of the ancient lake that once filled this basin. \nSeeing Badwater Basin is a unique and beautiful experience\, and I wanted to capture that in the joyful drive of this work. I also hope this work will serve as a reminder that we must continue to support and protect our National Parks in the United States to preserve stunning places like Badwater Basin and Death Valley National Park.

SUMMARY:Jenni Brandon’s “Sea Quartet” Performed by The Trident Chamber Ensemble at Arts Alive! in Falmouth\, Massachusetts
DESCRIPTION:The Trident Chamber Ensemble at Arts Alive! in Falmouth\, Massachusetts performed Jenni Brandon’s “Sea Quartet”. The performance took place on the Falmouth Library Lawn at 11:00 AM on June 18\, 2022. The Trident Chamber Ensemble plays chamber music for piano and reed trio (oboe\, clarinet\, and bassoon)\, offering traditional classical music through modern pieces\, including works by Mendelssohn\, Tomasi\, Zemlinsky\, Ibert\, Jenni Brandon\, and Jungmann. Melanie Hayn\, of the Trident Chamber Ensemble said to Jenni “your composition (Sea Quartet) was the audience’s favorite”. \nSea Quartet for oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon\, and piano was inspired by the beautiful ocean beside which we live as well as the many trips I have taken to visit the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach\, California. This magical place brings to us the beauty of the sea\, from the creatures that call it home to the delicate coral reefs and fragile ecosystems that depend on the balance of the sea for their survival. \nThis piece uses each of the instruments to tell the story of the sea in various sections\, from the playful waves to a “watery waltz”; from the “gentle pulse of the wave\,” to the clarinet’s “moonlight” solo. The relative calmness of the sea finally begins to break as the waves move faster and faster\, creating a “wild\, frothy frenzy” at the end of the piece. At this point the instruments joyfully crash over one another\, and we are left with the feeling of the power and excitement of the sea. \nCommissioned by the L.A. Musical Salon as part of my composer residency with the Vientos Trio during 2008-2009 and written specifically for a premiere at the L.A. Musical Salon with Rose Chen on March 7\, 2009\, I believe that a quote from the poem The Secret of the Sea by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow gives a wonderful impression of what this piece is truly all about: \n“Till my soul is full of longing \nFor the secret of the sea\, \nAnd the heart of the great ocean \nSends a thrilling pulse through me.” \n“Sea Quartet” is available for purchase on Jenni’s website at Sea Quartet – oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon\, piano sheet music (jennibrandon.com) \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Frederick Chorale Performed Jenni Brandon’s “We Are Home” for SSAA Choir\, Percussion & Piano
DESCRIPTION:The Frederick Chorale\, of Frederick\, Maryland\, performed Jenni Brandon’s “We Are Home” for SSAA choir\, percussion & piano in two performances on Sunday\, May 22\, 4 p.m and Monday\, May 23\, 7:30 p.m. Both performances were at the Frederick Presbyterian Church\, 115 W. 2nd St.\, Frederick\, MD 21701 \nThe Frederick Chorale celebrates the indomitable human spirit and the achievements of women choral composers in their return to public performance! Led by new artistic director Heidi Ackerman\, the Chorale will perform a diverse array of works by composers including Judith Weir\, Rosephanye Powell\, Carol Maillard\, Carol Barnett and Jenni Brandon. \nJenni Brandon’s We Are Home (SSAA choir\, percussion\, piano sheet music) was commissioned by Vox Femina\, Los Angeles under the direction of Dr. Iris Levine. Iris approached me to write this piece to fit onto their themed concert “Half the Sky: Hear Our Voices\,” and in particular to fit the section of the concert that spoke of “Home.” Because this would be a very personal piece for Vox\, I asked Iris to have the women write me stories\, poems\, haikus\, and anything else that helped them describe what “home” meant to them in singing with Vox. What I got was an incredible collection of texts\, written from the heart\, about their experiences and the joy that came from being a part of this singing community. I began to take phrases\, words\, and ideas from these texts and draw them together to create the text that I used in this piece. Although I wrote the final text\, it is a compilation of the voices of these women. More universally\, however\, this piece reflects what it means to be a part of a community – to share something important and to come “home.” \nThe premiere of this work took place on Saturday\, March 22\, 2014\, at Zipper Concert Hall at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles\, California. It was an honor to write this piece for Iris and the women of Vox. \n

SUMMARY:The Kalliope Reed Trio Performed Jenni Brandon’s “Sequoia Trio” in Somerville\, MA.
DESCRIPTION:The Kalliope Reed Trio performed Jenni Brandon’s “Sequoia Trio” in Somerville\, MA 02144. The concert took place at the First Church Somerville UCC 89 College Ave\, (617) 625- 6485. The program included an exciting collection of works by 20th century French composers and 21st century American composers\, including Ann Marie Simon – who wrote under the pseudonym Claude Arrieu\, Francis Poulenc\, Jenni Brandon’s “Sequoia Trio”\, and the world premiere of “Follow the Drinking Gourd” by Charles Murrell III. \nEach of the six-movements of “The Sequoia Trio” takes a quote about Sequoia trees from John Muir’s book The Yosemite and uses it to inspire the music. \nI had returned from a trip to Sequoia National Park in July of 2008 and was inspired by the great trees. I knew that these would be the basis for the new work\, and in searching for a voice of these great trees I turned to the words of John Muir for inspiration. \nEach movement of the “Sequoia Trio” (oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon sheet music) takes a quote about Sequoia trees from John Muir’s book The Yosemite and uses it to inspire the music. The opening waving pattern creates the gentle breeze as the growth of the tree starts in the bassoon\, moving through the clarinet and is carried all the way to the top of the tree through the oboe. Movement two is sassy and jazzy\, describing the kind of resilient attitude that young trees must maintain in order to survive. “The Three Graces” plays on the idea of the three instruments in the ensemble and Muir’s own reference to Greek mythology. Finally\, in “The Noble Trees” the instruments play a hymn-like tribute to the largest living things on earth. The two “Tree Interludes” represent the individual voice of a tree and its story. \nI. Sequoiadendron giganteum: The Big Tree \n“Southward the giants become more and more irrepressibly jubilant\, heaving their massive crowns into the sky from every ridge and slope\, waving onward in graceful compliance with the complicated topography of the region.” \nII Tree Interlude One \nIII Movement “A crowd of hopeful young trees and saplings…” \n“But here for every old storm-beaten giant there are many in their prime and for each of these a crowd of hopeful young trees and saplings\, growing vigorously on moraines\, rocky ledges\, along water courses and meadows.” \nIV. The Three Graces \n“Groups of two or three (sequoias) are often found standing close together…They are called “loving couples\,” “three graces\,” etc.… By the time they are full-grown their trunks will touch and crowd against each other…” \nV. Tree Interlude Two \nVI The Noble Trees \n“…the Big Trees (sequoia gigantean)\, the king of all the conifers in the world\, ‘the noblest of the noble race.’” \n– Quotes taken from The Yosemite\, 1912\nby John Muir\nText is in the public domain. \nThis piece was written during my composer residency with the Vientos Trio during 2008-2009. \nThe Sequoia Trio is available for purchase from Jenni’s website at The Sequoia Trio – oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon sheet music (jennibrandon.com) \nThis work appears on two CDs:\nSongs Of California: Music For Winds And Piano\, released by Jenni Brandon \nFrom Earth & Sky: Music Of Jenni Brandon on the Blue Griffin Recording label

SUMMARY:The Queens Gate Trio\, Performing Spider Suite by Jenni Brandon\, Placed 1st At The Charleston International Music Competition
DESCRIPTION:The Queens Gate Trio\, performed “Spider Suite” by Jenni Brandon\, and placed 1st at The Charleston International Music Competition. The competition took place May 1-15\, 2022\, in Charleston\, South Carolina. Their performance of “Spider Suite” is viewable on YouTube at Sydney Scherer\, Roddy Terrell\, Kassandra Ormsby – Spider Suite | 20th Century Music Competition – YouTube \nThe Queens Gate Trio is a new and unique group. The trio is from Charlotte and Greensboro\, NC. They actively perform throughout North Carolina. The group strives to be an advocate for new music\, having commissioned new works for flute\, clarinet and bassoon as an organization\, with plans on commissioning more! \n“Spider Suite” for oboe\, clarinet\, and bassoon tells the story of the adventures of a spider and his daily activities\, from spinning webs\, capturing bugs\, and beginning again. \nWe are first introduced to the world of spiders through the fast and many-legged theme in “Along came a spider…\,” full of skittering\, racing\, and lurking. In movement two a young spider takes flight – baby spiders will spin a balloon out of silk and fly away from their mother’s web to embark on their own journey\, letting the wind take them wherever it might. Our spider lands gently and immediately begins to make his web in “Spinning Song.” Once the web is spun\, it is time to wait for dinner to come along. Our spider dances “A Wicked Waltz\,” laughing manically as he waits for the “Happy Bug (unsuspecting)” to get stuck in his web. As the bug flies and sings\, he gets increasingly stuck in the web – listen as the timbral trills in the oboe become more and more frequent. In the final movement the spider reflects on his day (flying\, spinning\, and hunting…)\, tearing down his web\, as spiders often do\, to begin again the next day. \nMovement I:  Along came a spider \nMovement II: The Spider’s Flight (solo bassoon) \nMovement III: Spinning Song \nMovement IV: A Wicked Waltz: The Spider and the Happy Bug (unsuspecting) \nMovement V. The end of the day…begin again \nSpider Suite for oboe\, clarinet\, and bassoon was commissioned by the California Association of Professional Music Teachers and was premiered by the Vientos Trio at the CAPMT state conference in February 2010 at the Pacific Palms Resort. \n“Spider Suite” is available for purchase from Jenni’s website at Spider Suite – oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon by Jenni Brandon

SUMMARY:World Premiere - Sea Smoke on Gichigami for Soprano\, Bassoon\, Piano
DESCRIPTION:  \nSea Smoke on Gichigami by Jenni Brandon for soprano\, bassoon\, and piano tells the story of the elusive mythical creatures that arise out of Lake Superior (Gichigami) as the sea smoke covers the lake. Sea Smoke is a phenomenon when water vapor forms when cold air moves above warmer water.  As the water vapor rises\, the cold air only holds so much moisture\, forcing the water to become fog. As it rises from the lake’s surface\, it creates the heavy “sea smoke” that blankets the area. \nIn the stories of the Ojibwe people who lived in this area\, they told of an underwater mythical being called the Mishipeshu\, or the Great Lynx.  With the body of a feline\, horns of a deer\, and scales on their back\, they were said to live in the deep parts of Lake Superior (Gichigami)\, causing storms and death\, and would have to be placated in order to safely cross the lake. Within the poem by Linda LeGarde Grover\, you’ll meet these creatures and their activities during the four seasons of the lake\, from fall to winter\, spring to summer. The music paints a picture of these creatures in these seasons\, from the beautiful colors of fall leaves reflecting on the surface of the water\, to stormy and terrifying trips across an unforgiving lake. Ms. Grover writes of one story that tells of a rare sighting of these creatures – a young woman rowing a boat across the lake sees these mythical beings\, and returns to shore\, her hair now white from the terror and awe of her experience. \nIn representing this story using the words of Ms. Grover and setting them to music for soprano\, bassoon\, and piano (there is also a marimba version)\, I wanted the creatures to play an extremely important role in this story\, but also allow the sea smoke and lake to be characters as well.  These powerful elements of sea smoke\, water\, legend\, and location are an incredibly important part of the lives of the Ojibwe people\, and it is an honor to be able to share this legend through music. \nCommissioned by bassoonist Jefferson Campbell. \nLIVESTREAM – Thursday\, May 5\, 2022 7:30 pm CENTRAL \n \nPre-order Sea Smoke on Gichigami – available for shipping June 1st\, 2022\n  \nRead the original poetry by poet Linda LeGarde Grover \nSea Smoke on Gichigami\nBy Linda LeGarde Grover   \nLittle Spirit Moon\, Great Spirit Moon\,\nBear Moon and Snow Crust Moon\nthe four moons of winter \nSunrise\nthese coldest mornings of gelid moons\nsears the horizon\, slicing dawn from night\nred-orange light captured on facets of ice crystals\nthat spin and glitter in the air\, falling\nto the caul of translucent marble\nthat covers Gichigami. \nBeneath that frozen vastness\nthe lake world stirs with the earth;\nlight diffused to the palest of golds\nrouses spirits curled in sleep\non the valleyed lake floor; awake\nthey push with scaled claws and rise\, \nThese coldest mornings of gelid moons\,\ntheir breath white steam and silver mist\nrises from the vastness of ice.\nsea smoke on Gichigami. \nOn the shore an old man watches the song\ngray white silver drifting\, rolling across the lake.\nHe lifts a palm in morning prayer;\ntobacco scatters in four directions. \nThe song begins with spring\nand the Creator who made the earth\nstreams rivers lakes oceans\ngrass plants flowers trees\nthe medicines the seasons\nbirds animals insects\nand finally the first man\,\nborn to the granddaughter of the moon. \nShimmering cold in summers of the past\nthe lake carried them weightless buoyant floating\nSun glinting on wet scales and claws\non the shore they rested\nagainst gabbrous rock heated by the\nsun\,\nthis before rancor reached the world\nbefore the Great Flood and finally redemption\nand the retreat to the underwater\,\nthe cold darkness of the valley a\ngrace of sorts. \nSince then\, in early autumn\nwhen skies reflect gentian waters of the lake\nthey rise with the tide\, lured\nby the colors of the hillside\nwater-blurred red orange yellow leaves\nagainst the black of rocky cliffs\nyet obliquely they gaze\, cautiously\nremembering the spirit who dazzled by the\nbrilliance\ndrifted lost toward an inlet\nwhere a young woman rowing alone\nin a green-painted wooden boat\nrecoiled\, her hair whitening. \nLate autumn ice forms and breaks\nheavy on the surface of the lake\nslowing the movements of the spirits\nwhose scales and claws\ngray and dull starving for the sun\nreach above Gichigami to grasp the wind.\non the shore waves collide\nwith rocks and trees\nto crush those fragilities built by man. \nWinter subdues the waters to ice;\nbelow\, the spirits sleep lightly\ndreaming of the song they will sing\nat sunrise. \nThese coldest mornings of gelid moons. \nLittle Spirit Moon\, Great Spirit Moon\,\nBear Moon and Snow Crust Moon\nthe four moons of winter \n\n
