SUMMARY:Two Compositions by Jenni Brandon Performed At The IDRS Convention In Granada\, Spain
DESCRIPTION:The 47th convention of the International Double Reed Society ( IDRS )  is held from August 28th to Septermber 1\, 2018 in Granada\, Spain.  Two of Jenni Brandon‘s compositions are performed during the convention. The first is “Colored Stones” (2014) performed by Keith Sweger\, Bassoon.  The second is new American music for Santiago De Compostela featuring Jenni’s new work “Compostela” (2017) commissioned and performed by Eric Van der Veer Varner\, Bassoon. \nColored Stones tells the story of three stones: smoky quartz\, lapis lazuli\, and tiger’s eye. Some cultures and spiritual practices believe these stones have powerful qualities such as the ability to heal\, protect\, and offer spiritual guidance. The bassoon explores these beautiful stones’ unique qualities. This piece was the winner of the 2014 Bassoon Chamber Music Composition Competition. To be performed Thursday\, August 30\, 2018 at 12:15 PM. \nCompostela  was commissioned by Eric Varner  work tells the story of the pilgrimage along The Camino Francés.  It is the most popular of the pilgrimage routes through Spain that lead to Santiago de Compostela\, or the church where the bones of St. James the Apostle are said to be buried. As we travel along this path\, the bassoon narrates what we may see and hear\, how we may feel\, and what we discover about ourselves as we take this personal journey.  In one movement\, this work has several sections that highlight the journey along the way.  This will be the world premiere of this work. SUMMARY:Jenni's Dawn\, for Horn & Piano\, Performed and Recorded by Steven Cohen
DESCRIPTION:Steven Cohen\, accompanied by pianist Jed Moss\, performs and records Jenni’s new composition “Dawn” for Horn in F and Piano. It will appear on Steven’s upcoming CD “Cruise Control” to be released in July 2018. \n \nThe premier performance of Dawn is at the 50th International Horn Symposium (IHS)\, July 30 — August 4\, 2018. The 50th IHS takes place at Ball State University\, School of Music and the College of Fine Arts\, Muncie\, IN. Pianist Robert Conway will join Steven for this performance.\nSteven Cohen has been heard internationally as an orchestral\, Broadway\, and chamber musician. A freelance horn player based in New York\, he is a frequent guest with orchestras in the New York area and the Midwest\, while performing with various national touring Broadway productions. He is planning the release an album\, “Cruise Control”\, in August of 2018 which will present the world premieres of five new works for horn as part of a major commission collaboration with five American composers. Jenni’s composition “Dawn” is one of the album’s pieces. A CD release recital takes place for “Dawn” and the other CD compositions on Monday August 20\, 2018\, 7:00 PM\, at the Ann Goodman Recital Hall At Kaufman Music Center\, 129 W 67th St\, New York\, NY.\n“Dawn” for Horn in F and piano is inspired by a poem of the same name by Scandinavian Poet Edith Södergran (1892-1923). Steven wanted a work that was bold and adventurous\, and this poem guides us on such a journey into unknown lands revealed by the coming dawn.\nThe piece opens freely as the piano fluidly fills the space between night and dawn. The horn weaves the melodic gestures of the dawn\, skimming the surface with some unique techniques for the horn that represent the mysterious time between dark and light. The colors of the horn and piano throughout the work capture the sparkle of a sunrise\, the swift winds\, and the inevitability of the rising dawn. I was especially drawn to the idea of dawn being a female figure: “I am the pitiless goddess of the day…” and using the horn’s ability to be both delicate at times\, and at others\, powerful and grand\, to represent Dawn in all of her glory.\nIt is such an honor to write this work for Steven and to have him and Jed record Dawn on this exciting CD of new works for the Horn. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The United States Naval Academy Band Wind Trio Performs Jenni's "Found Objects: On the Beach"
DESCRIPTION:The United States Naval Academy Band Wind Trio (Musician 1st Class Emily Madsen on oboe\, Musician 1st Class Micahla Hendrix on bassoon\, and the group’s leader\, Chief Musician Sheila Cullen on clarinet.    ) performs Jenni’s “Found Objects: On The Beach”. The Wind Trio’s performance is part of the  Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association Annual Chamber Music Series at the The Lyceum\, 201 South Washington Street\, Alexandria\, Virginia. Each summer\, the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Association sponsors a Chamber Music Series at The Lyceum in historic Old Town Alexandria\, VA. Celebrating its 28th year\, the Chamber series continues to provide a diverse array of classical music in an intimate setting. These weekly performances are free and open to the public. The performances feature small ensembles and soloists\, primarily from the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and local arts community \nThe Naval Academy Band’s Wind Trio performs repertoire from Baroque and Classical standards\, French Impressionism\, modern American songs\, and works written by contemporary and local composers. Founded in 2016\, the primary duty of the ensemble is to perform for social functions hosted by the United States Naval Academy Superintendent at the historic Buchanan House. The group’s members also enjoy performing recitals for the community\, as well as providing music at events for the Brigade of Midshipmen. \nFound Objects: On the Beach for oboe\, clarinet\, and bassoon tells of finding objects on the beach – from tumbled stones to sea glass; from driftwood to black feathers on the sand and the seashells that populate the beach as far as the eye can see. A six-movement work approximately 23 minutes. Premiered by the PEN Trio (Nora Lewis-oboe\, Phillip Paglialonga-clarinet\, and Eric Van der Veer Varner-bassoon)\, this work is published by TrevCo Music Publishing on the new PEN Trio Collection Series! \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jenni’s “America Belongs to Us” Is Performed By The Indy Flute Choir and The Voce SATB Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Indianapolis VOCE SATB Choir and The Indy Flute Choir will provide the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church service music for the July 8\, 2018 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM church services. Following the 9:30 service\, VOCE and The Indy FLute Choir will present AMERICA BELONGS TO US by Jenni Brandon\, written for Flute Choir and SATB Choir.  This event is FREE to the public and sponsored by St. Luke’s Music Ministries. The church is located at 100 West 86th Street Indianapolis\, IN 46260. \n“America Belongs to Us” explores the idea of the immigrant – coming from another country and growing roots in America\, the land of opportunity for all. Leaving behind all that they know\, they move to an unfamiliar country\, often leaving family\, friends behind\, to hopefully make a better life for themselves and for the generations to come.  \nThis work was commissioned by Holland Chorale\, Ars Voce\, and the West Michigan Flute Orchestra to celebrate the diverse Latino culture in West Michigan and within their performing communities.  Through the unique colors of the flute orchestra and choir I wanted to tell this story of an immigrant bringing their culture and heritage to America\, and in using two choirs I was able to show the voice of the immigrant becoming part of the fabric of this country. I commissioned Oliver Mayer\, a Mexican-American playwright and a professor of Dramatic Playwriting at the University of Southern California to craft a text to tell of the Latino spirit in not only West Michigan\, but across the United States.    \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:LunART Festival will present a preview concert at the Verona Public Library on Monday\, May 21\, from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Festival directors Iva Ugrcic and Laura Medisky (playing “In the City at Night” for solo English horn by Jenni Brandon)\, and pianist Vincent Fuh\, will perform music by female composers for flute\, oboe\, and piano. Presented will be works by Jenni Brandon (“In The City at Night”)\, Madeline Dring\, Shumalit Ran\, and Alyssa Morris. \nIn The City At Night (solo English horn) was written at the request of Ryan Zwahlen\, oboe and English horn player with the Definiens Project .He was searching for new literature for the English horn and wanted to increase the repertoire by requesting composers to write new pieces for him to perform and record. Jenni wanted to write him a piece that uses the lovely\, lyrical range of the English horn while at the same time composing something that was also rhythmically fun to play. In The City At Night focuses on just that; it is at times playful and fast like many lights blinking on just after dusk in the city. At other times it is quiet and serene like the city streets that are empty at the early hours before dawn. In creating this world\, Jenni wanted the listener to be left with thoughts and impressions of a city after dark\, and the lone voice of the English horn telling the story of a night adventure on the city streets. SUMMARY:Jenni’s Chansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette Performed At The University of Wisconsin School of Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:Jenni’s “Chansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette” was performed at the University of Wisconsin’s Mead Witter School of Music concert by Christian Bonner. Shuk-Ki Wong pianist\, accompanied Christian. \nChansons de la Nature pour la Clarinette tells a story about nature as told by the clarinet’s agile voice. The French titles and basis of the pieces were inspired by the lyrical and pastoral quality of the French language and the images it invokes. The piece is also inspired by the images presented in Aesop’s fables (and Jean de la Fontain’s retelling of them); in particular\, the movement “Le Lièvre et la Tortue” tells of the slow tortoise beating the fast hare with his patience and determination. Both creatures are represented in this movement\, from the plodding of the tortoise to the quick movements of the hare. \nThe other movements also represent a variety of characters and situations from these famous fables. “Le Poisson” darts\, “Le Papillon” flutters and floats\, “L’étoile” shimmers in the night sky\, nature ‘dances’\, and “Le Serpent” is slippery and quick.  Each movement is short\, but just long enough to evoke a story and create a ‘song of nature’ for the clarinet.

DESCRIPTION:Jenni will spend three days at the University of Tenessee – Martin Campus\, for a composer residency.  Dr. Amy Yeung-soprano and Douglas Owens-oboe will give the world premiere of a new work for soprano and oboe commissioned by Dr. Yeung.  Jenni will also take part in activities with students and community: \nTuesday\, March 13 \nMasterclass for composers: (at 2:30 – 3:30 PM in room 245)  \nCurrent composition projects: Composers will sit down with Jenni and their fellow composers to look over their current writing projects and receive feedback and support. This is a valuable forum for sharing ideas and getting a fresh perspective on the creative process.  \n Roundtable discussion: Being a composer in the 21st century (at 3:30 – 5:00 PM at the Recital Hall)  \nJenni will lead a discussion with composers and others to discuss being a working composer in the 21st century.  A candid conversation about getting commissions\, making connections\, and using social media to grow a network of performers across the globe.  \n Wednesday\, March 14  \nMasterclass for composers and performers: (at 2:00 pm – 2:50 PM during the regular studio / area class – Recital Hall) \nThe Art of Collaboration and Creativity: Jenni has worked extensively with performers and ensembles in the creation of new works.  She believes strongly that the work thrives and continues to get performances beyond the premiere when the performers are invested in the work and have some input during the creative process.  Jenni will discuss past collaborative projects\, and have an open discussion with Amy Yeung\, professor of music at the University of Tennessee at Martin\, on their new work for soprano and oboe.  They’ll discuss the process of bringing a new work to the concert hall\, from commissioning a new work to choosing themes and texts.  An open forum will allow for questions and exploration of the importance of collaboration and forming relationships at the college level for a lifetime of collaboration and creativity beyond the university years. \n Thursday\, March 15 \nYoga for musicians: Stretching and movement to support the performer’s mind and body. (at 3:30 – 5:00 PM at the Recital Hall) \nJenni is also a certified yoga teacher who believe strongly in a balance between stillness and movement\, and getting moving to enhance the time the performer spends in rehearsal and performing.  This class is great for all levels\, even if you’ve never taken yoga before!  We’ll work in settings the performer might often find themselves in – rehearsal room chairs\, benches\, with both standing and seated poses and stretches that are easily accessible any time.  Work for tight shoulders and chests a must for proper posture and breath\, and some additional meditation and breath work to round out the performers’ ability to stay focused\, calm\, and grounded through rehearsals\, performances\, and auditions. \n Pre-concert talk (at 6:30 PM at the Recital Hall)  \nConcert of Jenni’s works at UTM (at 7:30 pm at the Recital Hall)

DESCRIPTION:Jenni’s new work “Shades of Violet” is written for the duo Violet (VIOla + clarinET) from Ball State University; Elizabeth Crawford – clarinet and Katrin Meidell – viola. They originally premiered the work on January 23\, 2018. Recently they performed the piece in concert with the Ton Beau Quartet in Toronto\, Canada. Violet will record “Shades of Violet” for the duo’s debut CD of new works written specifically for them. “Shades of Violet” for Clarinet in B-flat and Viola (JB 146) explores the complexities of the color violet throughout history as told by the Clarinet and Viola. \nThe Ton Beau String Quartet formed at the University of Toronto in 2005 and is now active in the Toronto area music scene. The quartet now consists of two original members\, cellist Sarah Steeves and violist Alex McLeod\, and two more recent members\, violinists Bijan Sepanji and Jeremy Potts On Friday February 2\, 2018 their concert\, Inner Voices: Maimets to Mozart\, features the Clarinet and Viola duo Violet.

DESCRIPTION:Jenni’s new work “Shades of Violet” is written for the duo Violet (VIOla + clarinET) from Ball State University; Elizabeth Crawford – Clarinet and Katrin Meidell – Viola. They premiered the work on January 23\, 2018. They are recording “Shades of Violet” on the duo’s debut CD of new works written specifically for them. \nThe title for Shades of Violet came about during a phone call with Elizabeth Crawford – Clarinet and Katrin Meidell – Viola. We were discussing this new work and their ensemble’s name “Violet” and the phrase “shades of violet” was mentioned.  I loved this phrase and knew it would inspire the work\, plus pay homage to this new ensemble’s namesake! \nWhen I started to research the color violet I found many interesting facts about this color. It is a “true” color in that it has its own set of wavelengths on the spectrum of visible light – between blue and invisible ultraviolet.  It also has a lot of other meanings throughout history\, encompassing spiritually\, emotions of love and passion\, and physical manifestations of the color.  I wanted to portray these “shades of violet” not just from the color spectrum\, but what it has meant to people symbolically.  I made a list of what I found when I researched this color\, and many of these words or phrases that inspired me during the creation of this work appear as descriptions of sections in the score: \nMeditation\nInspiration\nImagination\nPassionate\nUnion of Body and Soul\nOriginal\nUnconditional love\nMental balance and stability\nDelicate\nCrown Chakra\nDignity\nCompassion\nVain\nExtravagance\nFlighty \nIn some ways this work is a love story – two instruments seeking passion\, inspiration\, union\, unconditional love.  We reach this union toward the end of the piece\, represented through the higher registers of both instruments– a push and pull of harmonies and shades of violet that I think represent the complexities of what the color Violet represents. \n

DESCRIPTION:Jenni Brandon’s work\, the “Pleistocene Epoch: The Great Ice Age” for solo Bass Clarinet\, was featured on the Second Inversion program\, KING FM 98.1\, Seattle\, Washington. \n“I’m not usually a fan of music for solo single-line instruments\, but something about this solo bass clarinet piece hits me just right this week” stated Seth Tompkins\, the Program Director of Classical KING FM. “The more I listened to this\, the more I wanted to turn the speakers up to enjoy the rich bass and nuanced performance of Jennifer Stevenson. My enjoyment of this work might also have something to do with the fact that I’m an admitted biology nerd; three of the movements of this piece bear the names of ice age fauna.  These titles alone are sufficient to spur imaginative listening (for me\, at least)” said Seth Tompkins. \nFounded in 1948 by Dorothy Stimson Bullitt\, Classical KING FM 98.1 is among the longest-running classical radio stations in the United States. Today\, it is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 American classical radio stations. \nJenni’s “Pleistocene Epoch: The Great Ice Age” for solo Bass Clarinet tells the story of the animals that are constantly being dug out of the asphalt\, or the pits\, that lived during the Pleistocene Epoch\, or the great ice age\, over 10\,000 years ago. \nThe bass clarinet gurgles and oozes during “Asphalt\,” revealing the musical motives of the extinct animals that we will meet during the piece. The Sabertoothed Cat stalks its prey\, sneaking along the ground on the attack. The “Mammuthus Columbi” or the Columbian Mammoth was a huge creature with enormous tusks; a gentle giant that might find itself stuck in the asphalt\, leaving it open to attack by dire wolves. These wolves\, which hunted in packs\, are the most frequently found inhabitants in the La Brea Tarpits\, and their multiphonic battle cry leads them into the hunt. By the end of the movement\, they\, too\, have become immersed in the muck\, sinking back down into the asphalt to be discovered 10\,000 years later. \nEach of the animals went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene Epoch\, but their stories are preserved in the asphalt and told here by the gurgles and oozing of the bass clarinet. \nWritten for Jennifer Stevenson of the Vientos Trio\, this piece was composed as part of Jenni’s residency with the ensemble during the 2008-2009 season. \n

The Trio’s blend of oboe\, clarinet and bassoon will fill the parish hall of historic St. Paul’s\, Kent Church\, Chestertown\, MD\, at 3 p.m. Sunday\, Nov. 12\, (2017). Oboist Fatma Daglar\, clarinetist Robert DiLutis\, and bassoonist Benjamin Greanya are all principal players in the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. The concert is the latest offering of the National Music Festival’s Resonance Concert Series\, which runs from October to April. \n“Their program includes works by Jaques Ibert\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Darius Milhaud\, among others. One highlight is the “Sequoia Trio” by American composer Jenni Brandon“  Kent County News (Maryland)\, November 6\, 2017 \n“Each movement of the “Sequoia Trio” (oboe\, clarinet\, bassoon sheet music) takes a quote about Sequoia trees from John Muir’s book “The Yosemite” and uses it to inspire the music. The opening waving pattern creates the gentle breeze as the growth of the tree starts in the bassoon\, moving through the clarinet and is carried all the way to the top of the tree through the oboe. Movement two is sassy and jazzy\, describing the kind of resilient attitude that young trees must maintain in order to survive. “The Three Graces” plays on the idea of the three instruments in the ensemble and Muir’s own reference to Greek mythology. Finally\, in “The Noble Trees” the instruments play a hymn-like tribute to the largest living things on earth. The two “Tree Interludes” represent the individual voice of a tree and its story.” Jenni said about her Sequoia Trio \nSt. Paul’s\, Kent is located at 7579 Sandy Bottom Road in Chestertown Maryland\, off state Route 20 between Chestertown and Rock Hall\, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION:The Kamloops Symphony presents Reeds in the Wind\, performing Jenni’s “Spider Suite“\, in continuation of the Symphony’s Chamber Music series. Reeds in the Wind feature the Kamloops Symphony’s principal Oboe\, Clarinet\, and Bassoon players; Marea Chernoff\, Sally Arai\, and Olivia Martin. \nWe are first introduced to the world of spiders through the fast and many-legged theme in “Along came a spider…\,” full of skittering\, racing\, and lurking. In movement two a young spider takes flight – baby spiders will spin a balloon out of silk and fly away from their mother’s web to embark on their own journey\, letting the wind take them wherever it might. Our spider lands gently and immediately begins to make his web in “Spinning Song.” Once the web is spun\, it is time to wait for dinner to come along. Our spider dances “A Wicked Waltz\,” laughing manically as he waits for the “Happy Bug (unsuspecting)” to get stuck in his web. As the bug flies and sings\, he gets increasingly stuck in the web – listen as the timbral trills in the oboe become more and more frequent. In the final movement the spider reflects on his day (flying\, spinning\, and hunting…)\, tearing down his web\, as spiders often do\, to begin again the next day. \n“Spider Suite” for oboe\, clarinet\, and bassoon; commissioned by the California Association of Professional Music Teachers was premiered by the Vientos Trio at the CAPMT state conference in February 2010 at the Pacific Palms Resort. \nThe version for flute\, clarinet\, and bassoon is recorded by Ceora Winds on their debut CD Postcards. A contest for a musical concept has entered its final stage.
