SUMMARY:Tonight\, A Stolen Moment by Jenni Brandon Performed by 's-Hertogenbosch' Vocal Ensemble\, Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:‘s-Hertogenbosch’ Vocal Ensemble performs ‘Tonight\, A Stolen Moment’ by Jenni Brandon on Sunday\, April 13\, 2025\, 3:30 pm at the Grote Kerk\, Kerkstraat 20\, 5211 KG Den Bosch\, Netherlands.   \nThis concert by ‘s-Hertogenbosch’ Vocal Ensemble is about being displaced. It is also about bright spots and resilience in difficult times. The choir sings about longing for a safe haven\, literally and figuratively\, and about the role of memories\, dreams and fantasies as a survival strategy. Because after the night comes the day. Land in sight\, light on the horizon! \nThe core of the concert is ‘Tonight a stolen moment’ (2011) by the American composer Jenni Brandon. This penetrating work\, full of energy\, tells the story of people on the run. It’s about finding comfort in a radiant starry sky\, about cherishing precious memories and: how to make new memories\, in a new setting\, a new world. The piece moves from quiet intimacy to vibrant power and back again. Instrumentalists (piano\, strings\, percussion) reinforce the vocal melodies. \nProgram \n‘Tonight A Stolen Moment’ (2011) by Jenni Brandon Based on a Poem by Bobbi J Nicotera \n‘Meeresstille Und Glückliche Fahrt’ by Ludwig Van Beethoven \n‘Die Nacht’ by Josef Rheinberger \n‘Sure On This Shining Night’ (2005) by Morten Lauridsen \n‘Hope Is The Thing With Feathers’ (2019) by Sarah Quartel\, composed on a poem by Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). \n‘A Farewell’ by Elaine’ Hagenberg (2018). \n‘The Road Home’ (2002) by Stephen Paulus \n‘Ich Bin Der Welt Abhanden Gekommen’ by Arjan van Baest \nAll of Jenni’s compositions are available for purchase on her website Home – Jenni Brandon https://www.jennibrandon.com \n  \n

When Jennifer Gookin Cavanaugh approached me about writing a work\, she told me how much she has always loved visiting the park and that it had been a family tradition for many years. Both Jennifer and Elizabeth Ball Crawford\, who premiered this work\, taught at the University of Montana at the time of writing this work. I thought it fitting to write a work that highlighted the performers’ close connection to the area in which they lived. \nAs I began to spend time with hiking books\, topographical maps\, and pictures taken by many visitors to the park over the years\, I knew that a work about a journey through this park would be a great way to share not only Jennifer’s memories\, but also the many travelers on the Going to the Sun Road. Those fifty miles across the park bring the visitor in contact with lakes\, weeping walls\, animals\, meadows\, the Continental Divide\, and the power of the glacier that now moves closer and closer to extinction due to climate change. \nThe work is in one movement; however\, it is broken into several sections. I liked the idea of telling these stories like looking back at snapshots you might take on your vacation to remind you of these natural and manmade wonders. \nAll of Jenni’s compositions are available for purchase on her website Home – Jenni Brandon https://www.jennibrandon.com \n
