Description
Sea Songs: California Two-Spot Octopus for bassoon and piano offers a musical glimpse into the daily life of the California Two-Spot Octopus (Octopus bimaculoides). Named for the iridescent blue circles, called ocelli, on either side of its head, this species uses these markings to mimic the eyes of a larger creature, deterring potential predators.
Native to the coastal waters from Central California to Baja California, the Two-Spot Octopus is a solitary and highly intelligent cephalopod. Its eight arms allow it to explore shells, hunt prey, travel across sandy seafloors, and hide within rocky crevices. Using specialized skin cells called chromatophores, it can rapidly change color and pattern to camouflage itself, either lying in wait or stealthily pursuing its next meal.
In this piece, the octopus is portrayed as curious and intelligent: gliding across the sand, darting between rocks, and swimming in the surge. Her eight arms are musically represented through alternating 3/8 and 5/8 meters, evoking her rhythmic search for shells and her sifting through sand in a gritty cloud. As the hunt begins, the music grows wild and frenzied, capturing the intensity of her pursuit.
A cadenza-like passage reflects the sudden, dazzling shifts of her chromatophores, leading into a driving rhythmic section that culminates in a final chase—and a triumphant octopus.
This work, originally for tenoroon and piano, was commissioned by Kathleen Moran and premiered during the 2026 International Double Reed Society Conference at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Collaborating on this work with her and her new tenoroon was a true joy. Her vision to expand the repertoire for this lesser-known double reed instrument was both inspiring and exciting, and the colors of the bassoon or tenoroon and piano lend themselves well to the unique story of the California two-spot octopus.
