Description
Lead commissioners Valerie Nuzzolo (Clarinet) and Beth King-Bennett (Saxophone) invite performers to join a commissioning consortium for a new duet by American composer Jenni Brandon.
The Songbird is written for clarinet (E-flat, B-flat, and bass) and saxophone (soprano and baritone, or tenor) and is approximately 7–12 minutes in length.
Inspired by Kirtland’s Warbler, one of North America’s rarest songbirds, The Songbird tells the story of a habitat specialist that nests almost exclusively in young jack pine forests of northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario, and winters in the Bahamas. Through transcriptions of the bird’s song and the distinctive colors of the instruments, the music reflects the fragile balance of this ecosystem: dense, sandy ground, low pines, and hidden nests, as well as the quiet resilience that allowed the species to return from the brink of extinction.
This through-composed duet offers a compelling addition to the contemporary chamber repertoire and is well suited for recital, educational, and outreach programming.
